car 2016 Mustang GT six speed, drag radials in the trunk

2016 Mustang GT, six speed, 3.55 gears, 31,000 miles. bone stock except a cold air intake the last owner put on. tires are the factory size on all seasons that are about half worn.

went to Famoso for the friday test and tune on the 14th. first time ever on a real strip at 41 years old. here is the whole slip as promised, best of my four runs:

R/T .612
60' 2.212
330' 5.861
1/8 ET 8.497
1/8 MPH 85.31
1000' 10.932
1/4 ET 13.118
1/4 MPH 109.84

the other three were 13.4, 13.3 and a 14-something where i missed second and found fourth. every one of them the tires went up in smoke off the line. i tried launching at 2,500, at 3,500, at 4,000. the guy in the other lane in a stock Camaro SS left me like i was parked and then i caught up to him by the stripe, which i did not understand at all.

so what am i looking at here. what is a good 60 foot for this car and where is the half second everybody keeps telling me is in there.

your mph is the good news. 109.8 is roughly what a healthy stock S550 GT should trap. the engine is fine. your 60 foot is the whole problem.

rough math people use, every tenth you knock off the 60 foot is about a tenth and a half to two tenths off the quarter. a stock six speed GT on decent tires should see 1.9 something on a good night. you are at 2.21. that is your half second sitting right there.

and that is why the Camaro left you and you reeled him in. he hooked, you spun, then your car pulled harder from about 330 on. look at your 1/8 mph vs your 1/4 mph and it all adds up.

reaction time too, .612 is not helping you, though it does not count against your ET on a test and tune slip. ET starts when the car leaves the beams, not when the light goes green. reaction is just how long you sat there. you only care about it if you start bracket racing.

also mid november at Famoso at night the track is cold. cold track, cold tires, all seasons. you were basically drag racing on a dry ice rink.

car 2015 Charger R/T 5.7, the daily

Mopar guy wandering into the Ford thread, but the physics is the same on every badge.

on a manual car on street tires, the launch rpm is less important than the clutch. people dump it at 4,000 and blow the tires off, or bog at 2,000. you want to slip it a hair, like half a second of feathering, and roll into the throttle instead of stomping it. on all seasons it will still spin some. that is fine. a little spin is better than a bog.

your car has line lock and launch control from the factory in Track Apps. read up on both before you go back. line lock lets you heat the rear tires with the fronts held, which on a cold night is worth more than any rpm number. Ford's own pages on ford.com and your owner's manual cover how to turn them on.

car 2016 Mustang GT six speed, drag radials in the trunk

went back last night. here is what changed: Nitto NT555R drag radials on the rear on a set of used wheels i got off a guy in Delano for $300 with the tires already mounted. 22 psi in the rears. line lock burnout, short one, just enough to clean them. launch at about 3,000 slipping the clutch like reggie said.

R/T .541
60' 1.884
330' 5.302
1/8 ET 8.093
1/8 MPH 86.92
1000' 10.511
1/4 ET 12.684
1/4 MPH 111.37

12.68. same engine, same weather pretty much, 44 degrees. the 60 foot alone came down by over three tenths and the quarter by more than four. that is the whole thread right there in one slip.

one problem. on the second pass i got the rear end sideways at about 40 feet coming off the line, and caught it, and my heart is still going. the drag radials are great until they let go and then they let go all at once. i am going to stop trying to leave hard and just be smooth.

12.68 at 111 on a stock-motor 2016 is a real number. good on you.

for perspective my SRT8 is a 4,300 pound four door and ran 12.9 at Vegas Motor Speedway with 130,000 miles on it and me eating a burrito in the staging lanes. the trap was 108. weight costs you mph, and mph costs you everything at the back half.

sideways at 40 feet is the drag radial telling you the pressure is too low for that car, or you are dropping the clutch too hard. a lot of guys run 18 to 20 in them on heavier cars and 22 to 24 on a lighter GT. try a pound up next time and see if it calms down. and get your right hand off the shifter before you go into second, you will hold the wheel straighter.
